Smartphone users are celebrating, thanks to the USB C charger introduced as standard charging medium for every device. 

This came to effect when the European Union (EU) voted to introduce a single charger for electronic devices. 

These include mobile phones, tablets, cameras, e-readers, earphones, gaming consoles, health trackers, and the likes.

It’s anticipated that by 2024, all manufacturers for portable devices are expected to switch to USB-C charging port. 

Until now, most of us have been using different types of chargers, courtesy of the manufacturing parties of the small devices we all depend on. 

This move witnessed its first victory when Apple introduced USB-C type charging port in their latest model of iPhone 15 — a long awaited change by technology enthusiasts.

What Was Wrong with Conventional Charging in the First Place?

The problem that we unanimously faced was apparently not limited to inconvenience. Many others reported issues with charging, battery life, and heightened safety risks.

Moreover, use of different chargers contributed to colossal e-waste, another environmental threat we struggle to curb. 

The introduction of USB C cable charging as standard charging was as a result of EU’s climate change goals. 

These envisioned reducing 55% of emissions from 1990 levels by 2030, as well as a long-term goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050.

Conventional Chargers & Their Problems

Issues related to USB-A, USB-B, and others are faced by users on a larger front everyday.


These chargers may not have proper heat dissipation mechanisms, causing the charger to overheat. Time and again these types of mobile chargers have displayed overheating problems that can damage the charger, connected device, or even start a fire.

Inadequate Charging

As opposed to USB C charger that offers fast charging, other charging cables are relatively slower and thus result in problems such as overdrawing power, overvoltage or overcurrent. This damages the device in the longer run.

Counterfeit Chargers

Not many of the chargers are standardised by UL or CE. Thus, these don’t adhere safety standards and can pose significant risks to both the device being charged and the user.

Users always had their fair share of complaints with other chargers as they couldn’t use them with other devices interchangeably. This only leads to accumulating different chargers and increase in electronic waste.
